Scope and Content Viking buildings, chapel and associated remains, Brough of Birsay, Orkney The Brough of Birsay was inhabited in the 7th and 8th century by a Pictish community. A symbol stone, a small well and debris from a bronzesmith's workshop have been found. Traces of an Early Christian chapel have been found beneath the surviving church. This aerial view shows the Brough of Birsay, a tidal island, opposite the Point of Buckquoy. From the 9th until the 12th century, the site was inhabited by Norsemen and some remains of their buildings are visible on the Brough of Birsay. In the 12th century a small monastery was founded on the Brough of Birsay, with a church built in a Romanesque style. Unfortunately there is no evidence which identifies the religious order to which the monastery belonged, or its monastic status. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
