Scope and Content Brechin Cathedral, Angus It is likely that this site has been occupied by a religious community since around 970 or earlier. The round tower, which was originally freestanding, and some sculptures in the present cathedral, are all that remain of an early monastery. Apart from the round tower, which dates to the late 11th century, Brechin Cathedral mainly dates to the 13th century. After the Reformation, the choir, seen here, was allowed to fall into disrepair. A shortened choir was rebuilt in 1900-2. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
