Scope and Content Clydebridge Steel Works, Tollcross, Glasgow This works was founded by the Clydebridge Steel Co Ltd, and was acquired in 1916 by David Colville & Sons, when a new melting shop was constructed to meet wartime demand for steel. This was re-equipped for hot-metal working in the 1940s. This view shows a set of plate bending rolls, by James Bennie and Sons Ltd, Glasgow. in the boilermakers' shop, with a plate in position, ready to be rolled. Steelmaking ended at Clydebridge in 1978, as part of the nationalised British Steel Corporation's programme of phasing out open-hearth steel-making. As the works used molten pig-iron from Clyde Iron Works, it closed too. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
