Scope and Content Dalzell Steel Works, Motherwell, Lanarkshire Dalzell Steel Works was developed by David Colville and Son from 1880 to complement their existing malleable-iron works. A new large open hearth steel plant was installed in the 1914-18 War. After 1945 a new light-section mill was built by Colvilles Ltd. This view shows one of the small diesel-electric locomotives used to transport materials round the works. This one was built by Ruston and Hornsby of Lincoln in 1953, and was one of a number which replaced steam locomotives at that time. A large steelworks like Dalzell had many miles of railway linking the different parts of the works, and there were a number of locomotives constantly employed. This was one of the oldest locomotives in the works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
