Scope and Content Dalzell Steel Works, Motherwell, Lanarkshire Dalzell Steel Works was developed by David Colville and Son from 1880 to complement their existing malleable-iron works. A new large open hearth steel plant was installed in the 1914-18 War. After 1945 a new light-section mill was built by Colvilles Ltd. This view shows the melting furnaces in the brass foundry, These were gas-fired, and could be tilted to pour the melted brass or bronze into ladles from which moulds could be filled. This small brass foundry was used to make parts required to keep the steel works working, such as brass bushes in which shafts ran. It was typical of many such foundries.
