Scope and Content No 25 Learmonth Terrace, Queensferry Road, Dean, Edinburgh Learmonth Terrace, on the north side of Queensferry Road, was designed by John Chesser for Colonel Learmonth in 1873 as part of a new housing development to be built on the Dean estate. It is the only part of the scheme to bear the family name. No 25, the last house in the terrace, has an asymmetrical front with bow-windows, anthemion friezes and a columned doorpiece in a Greek Corinthian style. The sharp carving on the friezes has survived intact. No 25 was built in 1891-3 by James Simpson of Leith for the wine-merchant, Arthur Sanderson, as a grandiose version of John Chesser's basic theme for the rest of the terrace. The interior was regarded as the most sumptuous in Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
