Scope and Content Former Dean Orphanage, Belford Road, Dean, Edinburgh Dean Orphanage was designed with the utmost precision in Craigleith stone by the architect Thomas Hamilton in 1831-3 for the Orphan Hospital Trustees as their new building on land that once was part of the Dean estate. The building is a single long block of two storeys with a tetrastyle Tuscan portico, above which is the clock from the Netherbow Port in the High Street which was demolished in 1764. On either side are two unusual open-work towers. Inside, a hall leads to corridors on each side, originally for boys and girls respectively, and to twin stair-halls below the towers. The upstairs rooms were originally dormitories. In 1995 the building was converted for use as an art gallery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
