Scope and Content Detail of the portico of the former John Watson's School (now the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art), Belford Road, Dean, Edinburgh John Watson's School was built as a school 'for the maintenance and education of destitute children' and opened in 1828. The architect was William Burn who designed The Edinburgh Academy, a much less costly building, at almost the same time. The portico, with six massive Greek Doric columns, has its middle bays recessed into the building. A three-grooved pattern (triglyph) runs along the frieze above the columns. The building was converted to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 1981-4 whose art collection includes examples of German Expressionism, Surrealism and 'French art generally', as well as works by English artists and the Scottish Colourists.
