Scope and Content 17th-century carved stone from Dean House, Dean Cemetery, Belford Road, Dean, Edinburgh Dean Cemetery was laid out in 1845 by the architect David Cousin in the extensive grounds of the early 17th-century Dean House, which had been, for many generations, the seat of the Nisbet family, and was demolished earlier that same year. This carved pediment of a doorway from Dean House is built into the south retaining wall of the cemetery. It is inscribed 'HIC MIHI PARTVS HONOS' (Here my honour was born) and bears the initials of Sir William Nisbet and his second wife, Katherine Dick. William Nisbet, baillie and later Lord Provost of Edinburgh, bought the mills, lands and 'farm toun' of Dean in 1609, and built Dean House on his estate in 1614. He was knighted by King James VI on a visit to Edinburgh in 1617. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
