Scope and Content The former Lindsay's Mill, Dean Village, Edinburgh Dean Village, one of Edinburgh's most ancient and picturesque villages, lies in the deep river valley of the Water of Leith beneath the tall arches of the Dean Bridge. It was originally the largest of Edinburgh's old milling settlements. Lindsay's Mill, built in 1556 by James Lindsay, was rebuilt in the 19th century by the Incorporation of Baxters (bakers) of Edinburgh. Its water power came from a weir immediately downstream. The mill buildings were demolished in 1931. The village was a milling community as early as the 16th century, and there is much evidence of 17th- and 18th-century occupation by the Baxters of Edinburgh, who by the 17th century had 11 mills on this short stretch of river.
