Scope and Content Bell's Brae House, No 17 Bell's Brae, Dean Village, Edinburgh Dean Village, one of Edinburgh's most ancient and picturesque villages, lies in the steep river valley of the Water of Leith beneath the tall arches of the Dean Bridge. It was originally the largest of Edinburgh's old milling settlements. Bell's Brae House, on the south side of the river at the corner of the bridge and Bell's Brae, is an early 18th-century L-plan rubble-built house with a turnpike stair. Bell's Brae House was the first house in the village to be carefully restored. In 1946 it was bought by the artist, Aleksander Zyw, and converted by the architect, Sir Basil Spence, along with the adjoining house, as a house and working studio.
