Scope and Content The former Chapel of the Cathedral Mission, the Old Tolbooth, Bell's Brae, Dean Village, Edinburgh At the foot of Bell's Brae is the Old Tolbooth, a granary built in 1675 for the Incorporation of Baxters (bakers) of Edinburgh. It was adapted c.1900 for use as a Mission by St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, and in 1976 converted into flats. A large room in the building was converted c.1900 into a chapel for the Mission by the architect, Sir Robert Lorimer, who also designed the richly patterned canopy above the screen over the altar. The architect Robert Lorimer (1864-1929) created a distinctive Scottish form of the Art and Crafts style of interior decoration. He built or restored many churches, including St Peter's Church, Morningside, and the Thistle Chapel in St Giles in Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
