Description Detail of doorway with keystone dated 1675, Old Tolbooth

Catalogue Number SC 533154

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of ED 7385

Scope and Content Doorway, the Old Tolbooth, Bell's Brae, Dean Village, Edinburgh At the foot of Bell's Brae, facing the old bridge, is the Old Tolbooth, a granary built in 1675 for the Incorporation of Baxters (bakers) of Edinburgh. In 1976 the building was converted into flats. This moulded doorway in the east stair-turret of the granary has a keyblock with the date '1675'. The village was a milling community as early as the 16th century, and there is much evidence of 17th- and 18th-century occupation by the Baxters of Edinburgh, who by the 17th century had 11 mills on this short stretch of river.
