Scope and Content Thomas Telford's elevation and details for the Dean Bridge, Dean, Edinburgh The Dean Bridge was built by Thomas Telford 1829-31 to carry the old coach road to Queensferry on a new route. It was largely financed by Lord Provost John Learmonth to open the way for development of the Dean estate which he had purchased in 1825. Telford's design of four segmental arches, superseding his original plan for three, was to carry the road 32m above the river bed. Footpaths were to be borne on very flat segmental arches, springing from slim panelled piers attached to the main ones. Thomas Telford (1757-1834), one of the great civil engineers of his day, was responsible for constructing the Caledonian Canal (1802-23), and more than 1,000 miles of road, and 1,200 bridges in Scotland.
