Scope and Content West Mill, Dean Village, Edinburgh Dean Village, one of Edinburgh's most ancient and picturesque villages, lies in the deep river valley of the Water of Leith beneath the tall arches of the Dean Bridge. It was originally the largest of Edinburgh's old milling settlements. The West Mill, built in 1805, is a very large building of rust-tinted rubble, standing on the north side of the Water of Leith. In the distance, on the north side of Dean Bridge, is the distinctive pinnacled tower of the former Holy Trinity Church. The West Mill, externally the best example of the surviving Scots burgh grain-mills, was closed in 1891 as part of an attempt by the City of Edinburgh to reduce pollution in the river. It was restored as flats for the Link Housing Association in 1972. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
