Scope and Content Dean Village, Edinburgh Dean Village, one of Edinburgh's most ancient and picturesque villages, lies in the deep river valley of the Water of Leith beneath the tall arches of the Dean Bridge. It was originally the largest of Edinburgh's old milling settlements. The village is a collection of houses interspersed with larger buildings created at different times using a variety of materials and architectural styles. The iron footbridge was erected in 1877 at the site of an old ford. Dean Village developed round the mills that already existed on the Water of Leith at the time of the foundation of Holyrood Abbey in 1128. The name 'dene' means narrow, winding valley, and refers to the great ravine of the river west of Stockbridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
