Scope and Content Dean Bridge, Dean, Edinburgh The Dean Bridge, the principal bridge over the Water of Leith, was built by Thomas Telford 1829-31, and is one of his finest achievements. It carries the road from the west end of Edinburgh towards Queensferry over the deep ravine of the river. The bridge, one of Thomas Telford's boldest masonry designs, consists of four huge segmental arches, each with a span of 29m, which carry the road 32m above the rocky river bed. Access to the inside of the bridge is through a small manhole on the west pavement. The inside is fitted with electric light and ventilation holes, and it is possible to travel along the entire length of the bridge by following the curved arches.
