Scope and Content The former Trustee Savings Bank, Deanhaugh Street, Stockbridge, Edinburgh Stockbridge, on the banks of the Water of Leith, has more of the character of a small town than a suburb, although the pre-1813 village of riverside cottages, mills and villas was quite transformed by later development. Part of its distinctive skyline is the clock tower of the former Trustee Savings Bank beside the bridge. The building, built for the Edinburgh Savings Bank c.1840, was transformed in 1900 with balustrades and a corbelled-out tower. Stock Bridge, from the Scots 'stock brig', means a timber bridge or footbridge. In the 18th-century, before the village got its first stone-built bridge, there was a ford near the site of the present bridge and a wooden footbridge some distance upstream.
