Scope and Content Malta Terrace, Stockbridge, Edinburgh Malta Terrace, built c.1822, is an elegant one-sided terrace, with a corner tenement of c.1869, which forms a very short cul-de-sac running down from St Bernard's Row to the Water of Leith. The terrace, of two-storeyed houses and basements, has a rusticated ground floor and an array of individual cast iron balconies running along the length of the first floor. One of the chief delights of the early 19th century was the ironwork, which gave such a distinctive feel to the façades of terraces of the period. Most balconies were made in foundries in an enormous range of castings which could be bought 'off the peg'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
