Scope and Content Plan of the design for the Stockbridge Market, St Stephen Place, off St Stephen Street, Stockbridge, Edinburgh Stockbridge Market, designed c.1825 by Archibald Scott for Captain David Carnegie on the model of the Liverpool Market, included stalls selling meat, poultry, fish and vegetables. It was never a great success and closed in 1906. The market was designed as a series of covered stalls: the four blocks in the centre were for selling meat; those around the perimeter were for poultry, fruit and vegetables; and the fish stalls were separate, behind the north entrance at Hamilton Place. The main entrance to the market, through a grand archway lined with Doric pillars, was from St Stephen Place in the south. The smaller north entrance was less grand, and gave access to the common stair of a four-storeyed tenement in Hamilton Place. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
