Scope and Content Nos 40-46 Raeburn Place, Stockbridge, Edinburgh Raeburn Place, a mix of tenements and villas, was built between 1814-25 on the northern boundary of a new Georgian housing development planned by the portrait painter, Sir Henry Raeburn, on his country estate in the village of Stockbridge. Raeburn Place was originally lined with elegant double villas with front gardens. Some still survive, but others have been altered by the addition of attics and bay-windows, and by the replacement of the original six-pane window sashes with plate glass. Tenements were built at the east end of Raeburn Place, near to the Water of Leith. Then, further out of town, the street was lined with elegant double villas. Finally, on what was 'the very edge of town', there were three single villas. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
