Scope and Content St Bernard's Well on the south bank of the Water of Leith just west of Stockbridge, Edinburgh Stockbridge, on the banks of the Water of Leith, has more of the character of a small town than a suburb, although the pre-1813 village of riverside cottages, mills and villas was quite transformed by later development. St Bernard's Well, built over a mineral spring, is a circular temple among the trees. The base of roughly hewn stones supports ten Doric columns surrounding a statue of Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health. The pump-room is in the base. Lord Gardenstone erected this temple in appreciation of the 'sulphurous waters' in 1788. By 1888, the building was in need of restoration: the pump-room was refitted, and the original statue replaced with another carved by David Watson Stevenson. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
