Scope and Content St Bernard's Crescent, Stockbridge, Edinburgh St Bernard's Crescent, an imposing double-crescent, was built c.1824 in grand style as part of a new Georgian housing development initiated by the painter, Sir Henry Raeburn, on his estate on the north side of the Water of Leith. The three-storeyed centrepiece of the crescent has giant Doric columns rising from pavement level. The supporting two-storeyed houses share the same cornice line, but have balustrades instead of an attic floor, and an iron balcony at first-floor level. St Bernard's Crescent was the inspiration of Sir David Wilkie, a fellow artist of Sir Henry Raeburn. According to a 19th-century author, it is 'adorned with the grandest Grecian Doric pillars that are to be found in any edifice not a public one'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
