Scope and Content View from south-west of Sandyhills House Development, Glasgow The Sandyhills House Development was built for Glasgow Corporation between 1964 and 1970 by Baron Bercott & Associates. It comprises four tower blocks, which stand close to many mid-1920s cottages, arranged in irregular or axial street patterns. This photograph shows the huge tower blocks towering above the semi-detached cottages below. The blocks have contrasting panels marking out each floor, and are accessed by internal lifts. The cottages are harled and painted, and have bay windows. In the inter-war period the ideal home was seen to be a cottage within spacious streets and gardens. After World War II, the tower block was seen as the answer to problems of mass housing, and slum conditions in the tenements. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
