Scope and Content Dalzell Steel Works, Motherwell, Lanarkshire Dalzell Steel Works was developed by David Colville and Son from 1880 to complement their existing malleable-iron works. A new large open hearth steel plant was installed in the 1914-18 War. After 1945 a new light-section mill was built by Colvilles Ltd. This view shows the first stage finishing stand of rolls in the bar mill. This was installed here in 1939, when it was transferred from Mossend Steel Works, another First World War plant built by Beardmore and closed in 1934. The bar mill was closed as part of a scheme of rationalisation by the British Steel Corporation. It was a relic of the First World War, when it had been installed to make material for shell manufacture, as had Mossend. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
