Scope and Content Holyrood Laundry, London Road and Abbeyhill, Edinburgh This was a large steam laundry of the type that became popular from the mid 1880s, when laundry machinery was first made on a commercial scale. Such businesses washed and ironed cotton and linen for both domestic and commercial customers. This view shows the laundry from the Abbeyhill side. The taller building on the corner was the offices. The other buildings housed the washing and ironing equipment. The tall brick chimney served the boiler house. This complex closed c1990, and has been redeveloped for housing. The demand for domestic laundry services disappeared when washing machines and laundrettes became common. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
