Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 529866

Scope and Content Holyrood Brewery, Canongate, Edinburgh The Holyrood Brewery of William Younger and Co was the largest of the Canongate breweries, and the last to close. It was a large complex, almost completely concealed from the street by tenements and other buildings. This view shows the main entrance to the brewery from the Canongate, looking south, with a brewhouse in the centre, and storage tanks for maturing beer on the right. This brewery closed in about 1990, and was sold for redevelopment. Some fragments of buildings have been retained in what is now a complex of houses, offices and a hotel, some of innovative design, as recommended in a master plan.
