Scope and Content Tower of windmill, Gordonstoun, Moray This is the remains of a windmill of the 17th century 'vaulted-tower' type, which has been converted into a doocot. The segmental-arched vault which gave access to the mill from below has been buried. This view shows the tower sitting on the artificial mound into which its vault is built. The cap carrying the sails revolved on a track fastened behind the edge of the wallhead, which was at the top of the cylindrical section of the tower. This is one of a group of grain-grinding windmills of very similar designs built in many parts of Scotland in the late 17th century. The vault gave access to the mill when the sails were turning, and its top served as a platform for setting the sails. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
