Ceres, Bishops Bridge General View

SC 529622

Description Ceres, Bishops Bridge General View

Date 11/4/1978

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 529622

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Bishop Brig, Ceres, Fife This is a single-span rubble bridge, too narrow for wheeled traffic, and probably built for pack horses, as well as pedestrians. It is now only a footbridge. This view shows the bridge from the south west. The near-semicircular arch, its dressed-stone arch ring, and the fact that the arch is narrower than the abutments are all features of 17th-century bridge construction. The bishop of the bridge's name would have been that of St Andrews. Ecclesiastics quite commonly built bridges to improve access to parts of their domains. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
