Scope and Content Detail of dining-room chimneypiece in Torrisdale Castle, Argyll and Bute Torrisdale Castle was originally a castellated Georgian Gothic house, designed for General Keith Macalister in 1815. In the early 20th century, extensive north and south wings were added to the house, using the same Gothic style. This Gothic four-centred arched chimneypiece, dating to 1815, is carved from black marble. The spandrels, above the arch, are decorated with floral and foliage patterns. The jambs, on either side, have projecting pilasters with decorated capitals. The dining room is in the original part of the house, which is thought to have been designed by James Gillespie Graham (1777-1855), a Scottish architect who specialised in asymmetrical Gothic buildings.
