Scope and Content Labourers' cottage from south-east, Gowanbank Farm, West Lothian Gowanbank, near Linlithgow, was the country home of Sir James Gowans (1821-90). This energetic Victorian was a prominent architect who pioneered a new, elaborate, Gothic-inspired style but was also a successful railway engineer, quarry manager and local government politician. This shows one of the farm labourers' cottages designed and built by Gowans in the mid-19th century. It clearly demonstrates the ornate style he developed, his use of decorative masonry work and the craftsmanship needed to achieve this highly individual design. Throughout his career, Gowans was deeply concerned by the conditions of working class housing in Scotland. He designed several model workers' houses including 36 two-storeyed cottages at Rosebank in Edinburgh. He lived in one of these houses, with his family, for four years.
