Scope and Content Hillfort at Tap o'Noth, Rhynie, Aberdeenshire Tap o'Noth is one of the most impressive hillforts in Scotland. At least two phases of use have been identified. A large number of platforms have been cut into the hill which were probably the quarries for the stone, but some may have been hut circles. This is a view from the inside of the fort showing the massive stone wall. The wall is heavily vitrified in places. This could only have been done by burning a great amount of wood. This may have been done during the destruction of the fort. The site was excavated in 1891 where the original dimensions of the upper fort's walls were said to be up to 8 metres wide and 3.5 metres high. The high level of vitrification could only be done by using a large amount of brushwood and timber. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
