Swinton Village, Windmill View from W showing NNW front of mill and adjoining building

SC 525305

Description Swinton Village, Windmill View from W showing NNW front of mill and adjoining building

Date 10/4/1978

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 525305

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Swinton Windmill, Swinton, Berwickshire This is the lower part of what appears to have been a large wind-powered corn mill, with a slightly tapering rubble tower. A small rectangular rubble building has been added on the north east side of the tower. This view shows the building from the north west, with the addition to the left. There is a breach in the wall of the tower on its south east side. The regularity of the rubble, and the absence of small stones are notable. The mill was insured as a wind corn mill in 1800, but was shown as an Old Windmill on the Ordnance Survey six inch to the mile map of 1858. It must have been one of the largest windmills in Scotland.
