Scope and Content Eyemouth Harbour, Berwickshire The harbour at Eyemouth is fundamentally a natural one, at the mouth of the Eye Water. It was formalised in 1768 by John Smeaton, and substantially rebuilt in concrete in 1885-7, during the herring boom of the 1880s, by Thomas Meik and Son. This view shows the harbour from the south east, looking towards the landward end. On the left is the artificial channel created for the Eye Water, with behind it the large basin, both part of the 1880s works. The new harbour was made in the aftermath of a disaster in 1881 which claimed the lives of many herring fishermen at the mouth of the old harbour. A new basin was formed in the mid 1990s to the south of the 1880s works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
