Scope and Content Belford Windmill, off Belford Road, Edinburgh This is the remains of a wind-powered corn mill, of the vaulted-tower type. The remains consist of a rubble tower with a large segmental-arched opening in the front, flanked by the stubs of flanking walls which originally would have supported a vault. This view shows the building from the east, with the arched opening and flanking walls prominent. The garden wall to the left is later. The construction of the tower, with rounded large stones and many small pinnings, is typical of vaulted-tower mills. Vaulted-tower mills in Scotland all have circular towers with vaulted chambers running out from the base. They appear to have had a single pair of stones. The vault gave access to the mill when the sails were turning, and served as a granary. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
