Scope and Content Clyde Iron Works, Tollcross, Glasgow This works was founded in 1786 as a coke-smelting iron works. As latterly existing it was substantially as rebuilt from the late 1930s to provide molten iron for steelmaking at the nearby Clydebridge Steel Works. This view shows one of the turbo-blowers used to supply the blast air to the furnaces, situated in the works power station. On the right is the steam turbine which drove the blower in the cylindrical casing on the left. The combination of the iron works and steel works created Scotland's first integrated steelmaking complex. Clydebridge made steel by the open-hearth process, and the phasing out of this process resulted in closure in 1978. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
