Scope and Content Clyde Iron Works, Tollcross, Glasgow This works was founded in 1786 as a coke-smelting iron works. As latterly existing it was substantially as rebuilt from the late 1930s to provide molten iron for steelmaking at the nearby Clydebridge Steel Works. This view shows numbers two and three blast-furnaces, with their inclined charging ramps. The pipes at the top of the furnaces drew off gas which was cleaned and burned in the silver stoves on the left to heat the blast air for the furnaces. The combination of the iron works and steel works created Scotland's first integrated steelmaking complex. Clydebridge made steel by the open-hearth process, and the phasing out of this process resulted in closure in 1978. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
