Scope and Content Clyde Iron Works, Tollcross, Glasgow This works was founded in 1786 as a coke-smelting iron works. As latterly existing it was substantially as rebuilt from the late 1930s to provide molten iron for steelmaking at the nearby Clydebridge Steel Works. This view shows the travelling grab crane which spanned the iron ore stock yard, on the right, and which supplied ore to the bunkers below the rails on the left. The combination of the iron works and steel works created Scotland's first integrated steelmaking complex. Clydebridge made steel by the open-hearth process, and the phasing out of this process resulted in closure in 1978. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
