Scope and Content Fannyside Mill, near Cumbernauld, Dunbartonshire This was a large corn mill, originally water-powered. It is in an upland area not obviously suited to arable farming, and was probably built during the Napoleonic Wars, when very high grain prices encouraged cultivation of marginal land. This view shows the mill from the south east. The windowless wing on the left was probably the kiln. The lean-to on the right may have been the kiln. Note the ball finials on the gables, an unusual refinement. This mill had been gutted, and was used as a store by 1977. It probably had a very short life as a mill, but was still in fairly good condition. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
