Leslie, Railway Bridge View

SC 525089

Description Leslie, Railway Bridge View

Date 22/9/1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 525089

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Leslie (Cabbagehall) Viaduct, Fife This 14-span viaduct is part of the Leslie Railway, one of the 'cheap railways' built, especially in Fife, when capital was scarce in the aftermath of the Railway Mania of the 1840s. The engineer was Thomas Bouch, later designer of the first Tay Bridge. This view shows part of the viaduct, which crosses the valley of the river Leven. Note that the arches are semi-elliptical, rather than semicircular, an unusual feature that reduced the volume of masonry required. This railway closed to passengers in 1932 and to freight in 1967. It was then converted into a footbridge by the Glenrothes New Town Development Corporation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
