Scope and Content View of stairs at first-floor level in Old Rectory, Inveraray, Argyll and Bute The Old Rectory in Inveraray was probably designed and built by James Peddie, a mason and contractor from Leith. The house corresponds to a drawing submitted by him in 1816. Built of hewn coursed masonry, the two-storeyed house has three bays. This stone stair rises from the ground floor to the attic. It is a geometrical 'flying' stair whose inner edge is curved and cantilevered from the stairwell, without a solid central post. The stair has a mahogany handrail carried on curved iron balusters. At the foot of the stairs, the principal post, or newel, has curved iron brackets similar to those used in the Court House in Inveraray, which was built between 1816 and 1820.
