Scope and Content Private Sitting Room, The Station Hotel, Leonard Street, Perth The Station Hotel, built jointly by the Highland, Caledonian and North British railway companies, stood at a key position on the route north to the Highlands. This photograph, taken c.1895, shows a private room prepared for the arrival of Queen Victoria. The fireplace is elaborately draped and canopied in velvet, a fashion popular in the 1890s. The furnishings, by Wylie & Lochhead of Glasgow, include chair cushions covered with lace. Ewers and freshly laundered towels are provided for Her Majesty. The hotel was much frequented by Queen Victoria on journeys to and from her favourite castle at Balmoral on Deeside. The Queen, who was said to dislike dining on trains, found The Station Hotel a convenient stopping point for the royal luncheon. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
