Scope and Content Former maltings and kiln block from north-east, Mortlach Distillery, Dufftown, Moray Mortlach Distillery was established in 1823 by James Findlater, Alexander Gordon and Donald Mackintosh. It was restored in 1852 by John Gordon, and the number of stills increased from three to six in 1897. After various owners in the 1920s it was bought by Scottish Malt Distillers in 1930, and completely rebuilt in 1963. This shows the 14-bayed, three-storeyed maltings, built in 1860, with attached malt kiln topped by a pagoda roof which was added in the late 19th century. Within these structures barley was steeped in water, allowed to germinate on the maltings floor, and then dried over peat fires in the malt kiln. The maltings were last used in 1968. Mortlach was the first distillery to be built at Dufftown, and one of the first to take out a distilling licence after they were introduced in 1823, in an attempt to control and monitor the distilling industry.
