Scope and Content Balconies on the rear of Moray Place, Edinburgh Moray Place, designed in 1822 by James Gillespie Graham as the huge polygonal showpiece of his new housing development on the Earl of Moray's estate, has been described in the way of private building as 'the most splendid thing in Edinburgh'. These elegant balconies, on windows on the rough-faced rear elevation overlooking Doune Terrace, form part of the imposing cliff-like back of Moray Place, only seen to advantage from the other side of the Water of Leith. The Earl of Moray was careful that the rear elevations, which overlooked the pleasure gardens running down to the Water of Leith, should be, like the front ones, 'in a regular and uniform order', and be built according to the designs of the architect.
