Scope and Content Balconet, Moray Place, Edinburgh Moray Place, designed in 1822 by James Gillespie Graham as the huge polygonal showpiece of his new housing development on the Earl of Moray's estate, has been described in the way of private building as 'the most splendid thing in Edinburgh'. This elegant balconet or miniature balcony, the width of an individual window on the drawing-room floor, shows the anthemion and palmette motifs, both popular Classical ornaments found in Georgian Edinburgh. The anthemion (literally, honeysuckle), a Classical ornament like a honeysuckle flower, and palmette, a Classical ornament like a symmetrical palm shoot, were used extensively throughout the housing development on the Earl of Moray's estate.
