Scope and Content Centrepiece and end pavilions, Moray Place, Edinburgh Moray Place, designed in 1822 by James Gillespie Graham as the huge polygonal showpiece of his new housing development on the Earl of Moray's estate, has been described in the way of private building as 'the most splendid thing in Edinburgh'. Each of the twelve sides of Moray Place has a symmetrical façade, and placed at regular intervals are six pedimented centrepieces with giant Doric columns, and pilastered end pavilions. The old estate of Drumsheugh, acquired by the 9th Earl of Moray from the Heriot Trust in 1782, was feued out by the 10th Earl 40 years later. All the streets were named after the Moray family or lands in the 'Conditions of Sale' issued in 1822. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
