Scope and Content Shop front, No 2B Scotland Street, Edinburgh Scotland Street, begun in 1823 as Caledonia Street, was built mainly of four-storeyed tenements which step down the steep hill from the eastern end of Drummond Place to meet Royal Crescent at the north west corner. This half-basement purpose-built shop is entered from the street down over a platt (platform), and has a cast iron balcony with an open diagonal grid base, and a curved end. In the northern New Town, shops were found at basement, half-basement, and ground-floor level. They had double doors flanked by one or two large windows, and had a cast-iron balcony to allow customers to closely inspect the window displays. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
