Scope and Content Knockando Woollen Mill, Morayshire This small mill was originally constructed as a water-powered carding mill, and was later extended to house a spinning mule. Finally a weaving shed was added, with two power-looms. The mill was converted to electric drive after World War II. This view shows the skeleton of the overshot waterwheel which drove all the machinery in the mill. The wheel is complete apart from the wood of the buckets. The water came from the left on a wooden launder, which has also gone. This mill has been kept alive by Hugh Jones, who has used the looms to make fine woollen fabrics. In 2000 a trust was set to ensure the survival of this remarkable survival. It is the smaller of two surviving country woollen mills in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
