Scope and Content Knockando Woollen Mill, Morayshire This small mill was originally constructed as a water-powered carding mill, and was later extended to house a spinning mule. Finally a weaving shed was added, with two power-looms. The mill was converted to electric drive after World War II. This view shows the front of one of the two broad power-looms. These can weave simple patterns, determined by the selection of longitudinal (warp) threads and the cross (weft) threads. The latter are selected by changing shuttles. This mill has been kept alive by Hugh Jones, who has used the looms to make fine woollen fabrics. In 2000 a trust was set to ensure the survival of this remarkable survival. It is the smaller of two surviving country woollen mills in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
