Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 519652

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Benriach-Glenlivet Distillery, Morayshire This Scotch Malt Whisky distillery was built in 1898, and acquired in the same year by the Longmorn-Glenlivet Distilleries Ltd. Benriach closed in 1900, and did not reopen until 1965, when it was rebuilt by the Glenlivet Distilleries Ltd. This view shows the stillhouse, with its three stills, an unusual number. The still on the right has a band of riveting, and probably incorporated parts of one of the 1898 stills, as riveting had been supplanted by welding for new construction by 1965. The still on the left appears to be an extension to the original stillhouse, and is probably an addition of 1965. Benriach is operated in conjunction with Longmorn, to which it was connected by an internal railway system until c1980. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
